Davyd Gorodensky was a military commander and statesman of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, known as a defender of Grodno and one of the leading commanders of Prince Gediminas.

No historical portraits of Davyd Gorodensky have survived, so Sergei Oganov created a composite image of a medieval warrior. The prince is depicted on horseback, and the sculpture itself is carved from a single block of light gray granite.

“For me, Davyd Gorodensky is a symbol of rock and fortress. I wanted him to look exactly that way.”

The base features the outlines of a medieval castle, while the reverse side depicts the Kalozha Church (according to one legend, Davyd Gorodensky was buried near it).

Sergei Oganov’s design was selected as the winner of the monument design competition.
